Medical and surgical residents in Birmingham are most likely to live in or near one of the communities listed below. Scroll down to see notes I’ve included on each area. If you have any questions about the different communities and what they have to offer, don’t hesitate to reach out to me.
Crestwood/Avondale/Forest Park/Highland Park – Trendy area near UAB with excellent eateries, breweries, parks, and nightlife. Neighborhoods feature pre-war bungalows and ranch-style homes from the 1950s. Many young professionals and residents live here to be close to the action.
Condo/Loft District – In the shadow of Birmingham’s Downtown are condominiums and lofts that have grown in popularity very recently. If you enjoy a city lifestyle, this is a great option.
Crestline Park & Crestline Gardens – Adjacent to the eastern edge of Mountain Brook and near to Crestwood and Avondale, this neighborhood is popular with residents because of location. It features homes built in the 1950s and 1960s.
Edgewood – Some of the most sought-after real estate in Birmingham can be found in this section of Homewood. Marked by top-rated schools, community parks, bungalows and craftsman-style architecture, and tons of young professionals, the prices can be steep but many feel that it’s worth it.
West Homewood – Another area of Homewood, generally outlined by the Hall Kent Elementary School zone. This neighborhood was developed in the 1950s and early 1960s and features mostly ranch-style homes. Recently, the completion of Patriot Park and the addition of new neighborhood businesses has increased the popularity of the area.
Oxmoor Valley – Officially zoned as part of Birmingham city, Oxmoor Valley currently consists of several modern-era neighborhoods like Waterford Falls, Oxmoor Glen, and Oxmoor Ridge. Many residents are attracted to these neighborhoods because of proximity to the hospital and a (relatively) lower-maintenance home compared to older homes.
Bluff Park/Shades Mountain – These two areas of Hoover area are generally close enough to I-65 to allow for a drive-able commute to the medical center. Hoover schools are rated highly, making for stable resale values.
Western Vestavia – Another area with highly-rated schools, prices in Vestavia can often be too high for a resident. However, affordable homes can sometimes be found in a small section on the western side of the area off of Columbiana Road.
Cahaba Heights – Annexed into Vestavia in 2002, this area is another potentially affordable neighborhood for residents and is relatively close to the medical center.
Altadena – Located just south of Cahaba Heights, Altadena is in unincorporated Jefferson County, which means no municipal taxes.
Irondale – Another Jefferson County area, Irondale features many established neighborhoods with larger yards, but several new construction developments have popped up in the last several years.
Roebuck Springs/South Roebuck – Recently growing in popularity due to its low-priced homes, this area is similar to Crestwood/Avondale in that it has many pre-war and ranch style homes.
Fultondale/Gardendale/Mt. Olive – North of downtown, these two areas are the most affordable in the list and feature many options for those who prefer to own a more modern era home.
